Happy Avatar Day!!!

Happy Avatar Day! We are wrapping the month up with a deeply nostalgic show "Avatar: The Last Airbender!" We potatoes have been over the moon about "Avatar: The Last Airbender" since the show was on T.V! We own the original DVD box sets, and it is a big part of our childhoods! We know that this show is not considered an Anime, but it is heavily inspired by Anime. We chose this show for this month for 2 main reasons, it is what the Birthday Potato wanted to watch this month and someone we hold dear asked us to create a drinking game for the show!

We've been on a thrilling ride through various anime worlds so far this month… but we must admit to having a deep love and strong bias for "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Avatar’s mix of elemental magic, deep lore, excellent writing and heartwarming characters is amazing! If you haven't ventured into the world of Team Avatar, trust us, it's high time you joined the journey!

Now, we do want to give a quick a heads-up for those new to the series: "Avatar: The Last Airbender" delves deep into themes of friendship, responsibility, complex family dynamics, abuse and the quest for balance and peace in a war-torn world. We did not find this show to be too triggering. We found it to be a light, funny, and excellent show. But, it is important to be aware of any potential triggers and to protect yourself as needed.

The itinerary is apparent, but it is as follows!

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Water (2005) (Book One)

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Earth (2006) (Book Two)

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Fire (2007) (Book Three)

The show ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. We will only be giving a brief overview of the show as it is long, complex and we do not want to give away too many spoilers. There is likely to be some spoilers though so please take that into consideration and read cautiously. Let’s take a peek!

Our story begins in a world divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Each nation has “benders” who can control their respective elements. But only the Avatar, a spiritual guide of the world, can master all four elements. As the Fire Nation starts a war with the rest of the world, the Avatar mysteriously disappears. The show kicks off with two Water Tribe kids, Katara (Mae Whitman), and Sokka (Jack De Sena), discovering a young Airbender named Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) – who just happens to be the missing Avatar, frozen in ice for a hundred years!

From there, it’s a fun and thrilling rollercoaster of elemental battles, spiritual quests, and a journey across the world to stop the Fire Nation’s dominance. But it’s not just about bending the elements; it’s about healing, growth, and forming unbreakable bonds of friendship.

But! What really makes "Avatar: The Last Airbender" stand out is the gorgeous animation, and rich character development. Aang, with his youthful spirit and heavy burdens; Katara, the compassionate and powerful waterbender; Sokka, the witty and resourceful non-bender; Toph, (Michaela Jill Murphy) the sassy and strong earthbender and Zuko, (Dante Basco) the exiled prince of the Fire Nation with a beautiful and complex story of redemption. Then there is our favorite character Iroh, (Mako). Each character adds a unique flavor to the show’s colorful palette, and brings something fun and unique to the table!

To fully embrace Avatar Day, and to celebrate a special Birthday we made a whole weekend out of it! We whipped up food lightly inspired by the show, binge-watched the series from the iceberg discovery to the epic final battle and came up with a drinking game that we had a blast with and hope that you’ll try out!

White rice, homemade Chinese BBQ pork noodles, Beifong Beef, Gyoza, Soup Dumplings, Stir Fried Vegetables (They would not fit on the board), and lastly some awesome heated Sake! Yes it is an eclectic array, but we had fun and it was all incredibly delicious!

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" isn’t just a show to us, it’s a celebration of imagination, friendship, and the journey towards a better self and a better world. So, let’s raise a cup of jasmine tea to the show that has brought us so much joy, wisdom, and wonder. Here's to "Avatar: The Last Airbender!" The amazing show that turned one of us potatoes into an Anime fan despite it technically not being one! Cheers to The Avatar: The Last Airbender and cheers to you!

Quick little note here, this was an entire three days of drinking and bingeing Avatar, so as much as we love what we do here on this blog, we will be taking a little time off to give ourselves a breather! We truly do create these games, and test them! It can be a lot at times even with good preparation, plenty of food, water and being extremely safe generally. We highly recommend doing this one over several weekends, and doing everything you can to be thoroughly prepared and safe! As always have fun but remember to be safe and drink responsibly! (Drinks can be water, soda, anything nonalcoholic, etc. Please be safe, have fun and take care of you!)
