Happy Hobbit Day 2024!!

Fellow hobbits, potatoes and lovers of all things Middle-earth, the day we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived…HOBBIT DAY is here again!! After a full year of anticipation, we potatoes are absolutely thrilled to dive back into the magic of this beloved holiday! Can you believe it’s been 12 years since our first official Hobbit Day celebration? Time flies, but our excitement for this day only grows stronger with each passing year!

For the inexperienced, Hobbit Day falls on September 22nd each year in honor of the two incredibly important hobbits! Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, who both share this day as their birthday! The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring even begins with Bilbo’s grand birthday party! We potatoes are obsessed and thereby take the opportunity to commemorate these beloved characters in our own way with a fun-filled celebration!

We’ve been celebrating this day every year since 2012, but our love for Middle-earth goes even further back to when the Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions first came out. Watching those epic films in theaters as children is still one of our fondest memories, and Hobbit Day is the perfect excuse to relive that adventure, year after year.

Now, as you all know, we’ve officially dubbed this month “Live-Action Fantasy Month.” We’ve been watching loads of different fantasy films leading up to today, but let’s be honest…nothing can truly top The Lord of the Rings trilogy! Whether it's the incredible writing of J.R.R. Tolkien or the breathtaking cinematic adaptation, these stories are in a league of their own. If you’ve never read the books or seen the movies, we highly recommend it! Seriously, we can’t rave about them enough!

So, what’s the plan for Hobbit Day 2024?

Well, we potatoes are creatures of habit, so we’re sticking to our beloved traditions that brings us so much joy year after year! As always, we’re settling into an all-day Lord of the Rings marathon! Extended Editions of course! That means we’ll be relaxing inside for the epic adventure of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King in their full, uncut glory. These movies are long, but let us tell you, they are absolutely worth every second!

Of course, no Hobbit Day celebration would be complete without food! We’ll be channeling our inner hobbits and indulging in breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. A charcuterie board, fresh veggies, bread, fruit, and more delicious snacks as well as some special homemade Rabbit stew! This is not only in theme! It will help keep us going throughout the day as you need more energy than you may think for a marathon of this magnitude! After all, if there’s one thing hobbits love, it’s a good meal (or seven)!

Sourdough Bread, Rosemary crackers, various meats, firm and soft cheeses, fruits, veggies, and seed cakes (poppy seed muffins)!

And yes, we’re bringing back the legendary Lord of the Rings drinking game! Originally known as “Drink ‘Till You’re In Middle Earth.” This game has been a staple of our Hobbit Day celebrations since the very first one back in 2012. While we can’t claim to have invented the original game, it’s become an irreplaceable part of the day! It is such a fun and lighthearted way to get even more immersed in the films!

Homemade Rabbit Stew! (We de-boned the rabbit ourselves, as well as made homemade stock with them...it is absolutely delicious, but it was a task, so keep that in mind if you want to try your hand at this stew! :)

Homemade Rabbit Stew with homemade savory Rosemary scones!

Over the years, we’ve made a few minor adjustments to the rules, but we’re always open to suggestions. So, if any of you wonderful readers have ideas for new rules or tweaks, drop them in the comments! Are there any rules you think should be added? We’d love to hear your thoughts on how to make this game even more fun and engaging!

We’re still searching for the original creator of this drinking game, which we found on “Kyle’s Vault of Cool” on Tumblr years ago (unfortunately, that page no longer exists). If anyone knows the brilliant mind behind it, please let us know in the comments so we can properly thank them! This game has given us so many laughs and memories, and it truly sets Hobbit Day apart!

Champagne and blackberry cocktails!

As always, feel free to play the drinking game with us or leave it behind! It’s all about enjoying the day in your own way. Whether you’re raising a glass of wine with us, or sipping on some herbal tea, this holiday is all about fun, fellowship, and revisiting the magical world of Middle-earth in the manner that works best for you!

Here’s our official Hobbit Day 2024 itinerary:

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

From snacking like hobbits to binge-watching the trilogy, Hobbit Day is always a blast! We’ve made a big tradition out of it, and we highly recommend adding it to your calendar if you haven’t already! With life being as busy, and stressful as it is, this day gives us a chance to slow down, appreciate the magic of storytelling, and have some lighthearted fun with our favorite fictional world. We potatoes are firm believers in responsible, harmless fun and we feel that there is not enough of it in the world today. We highly encourage grabbing fun, relaxation, and celebration when you can; where you can!

So, here’s to another year of adventure, fellowship, and the unmatched beauty of Tolkien’s Middle-earth! Whether you’re joining us for the all-day marathon or just popping in to watch a few scenes, we hope you have a magical, fun-filled Hobbit Day 2024!

Happy Hobbit Day, everyone! Until next year, may your hearts be as full as your bellies, and may the road always rise to meet you. Cheers to Tolkien and the amazing world and characters he created! Cheers to good food and good company! And most importantly, cheers to you!
